European Union (EU) pledges 78 million euro to the Government of Tajikistan

On April 14, 2020, the Minister of Economic Development and Trade distinguished Zavqizoda Zavqi Amin met with the Head of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Tajikistan, Mrs. Marilyn Yosefson.

During the meeting, the Minister of Economic Development and Trade, as co-chair of the Tajik part of the EU-Tajikistan Cooperation Committee, noted the request letter of Tajikistan to the President of the European Commission regarding the provision of financial and technical support to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic consequences to the national economy.

In this regard, the European Union Ambassador Marilyn Josephson said that the European Union, in response to a request from the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, will provide additional grant assistance in the amount of 48 million euros and a loan in the amount of 30 million euros through the investment Bank of Europe to mobilize the Anti-Crisis Plan to prevent the spread of the pandemic COVID-19.

These funds will be used for education, healthcare, border protection, improving the health care system, water supply and sanitation, as well as eliminating economic and social negative consequences. In addition, 1.3 million euros were allocated for the provision of protective clothing for medical workers in 25 medical centers, and funds in the amount of 780 thousand euros were allocated for the provision of sanitary and hygienic conditions for educational institutions.

It was noted that within the framework of the meetings of the Intergovernmental Commissions, grant assistance in the amount of 631 million euros was raised for the development of the socio-economic sector, health, education, agriculture and energy, in addition, in accordance with the new multi-year indicative program of the EU for 2021-2027 Funds worth around 360 million euros will be allocated.

The meeting touched upon other issues of developing bilateral cooperation. In turn, Mr. Zavqizoda Z. A. expressed gratitude to the Representative of the European Union and expressed the willingness of the Tajik side to strengthen and develop bilateral cooperation.
