Meeting of the Minister of Economic Development and Trade with the head and members of the Life and Livelihood Fund of the Islamic Development Bank and the Regional Director of the Islamic Development Bank in Central Asia

On September 5, 2022, the Minister of Economic Development and Trade, Country Director of the Islamic Development Bank in Tajikistan Zavqizoda Zavqi Amin met with the head of the Life and Livelihood Fund of the Islamic Development Bank Walid Addas, 19 members and officials of the Fund and the Regional Director of the Islamic Development Bank in Central Asia by Ibrahim Shukri.

Zavqizoda Z. A. expressed gratitude to the delegation of the Islamic Development Bank and the Life and Livelihood Fund of the Islamic Development Bank for their support in the economic and social development of the country and noted that the Founder of Peace and National Unity - Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan, his excellency Emomali Rahmon in politics gives priority to the development of the social sphere, including healthcare.

It was noted that as a result of timely measures taken by the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan during the period of independence, the average annual growth of the economy was ensured at the level of more than 7%, and the real volume of gross domestic product increased by 4.6 times. The poverty rate of the population decreased from 83% in 1999 to 26.3% in 2020.

Since independence, the country has built and put into operation 2,723 healthcare facilities and their number has increased to 5,116 today. In 2020, the life expectancy of the population reached 75.1 years, which is 5 years more than in 1991. During this period, the overall mortality rate decreased by 40%, maternal mortality during childbirth by 73%, and mortality of children under 5 years of age by 85%.

It should be noted that the Life and Livelihood Fund was established in 2016 and currently operates in 33 member countries of the Islamic Development Bank, the Republic of Tajikistan is implementing the project “Improving medical care for mothers and children in 4 districts of the Khatlon region of the Republic of Tajikistan » in the amount of USD 27 million.

During the meeting, issues of the implementation of the project “Improving medical care for mothers and children in 4 districts of the Khatlon region of the Republic of Tajikistan”, improving medical care, sanitation, and drinking water supply in remote areas of the country were discussed.

In continuation of the meeting, Zavqizoda Z.A. urged the delegation of the Islamic Development Bank to allocate more funds to support priority areas of the national economy, especially addressing social issues, given the impact of current global crises, which was well received.
