Participation in the 77th session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific
The 77th session of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) was held in virtual form from 26 to 27 April 2021, on the principle of “better than before” and regional cooperation in Asia and the Pacific.
On April 26, 2021, the Founder of Peace and National Unity - Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon spoke at the opening of the meeting considering current threats and impact of the coronavirus pandemic COVID-19, which still continues in many countries of the world and called the event very important and timely.
The Head of State stressed that today there is no country or sector in the world that is protected from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Economic growth, State budget, foreign trade, the exchange rate of the national currency, and the activities of industrial enterprises and service institutions around the world are suffering from the negative effects of the pandemic. In addition, the pandemic reduced to an unprecedented increase in global unemployment, which could put various countries at risk of food insecurity.
Also in the second part of the session, on 27 April, the Deputy Minister of Economic Development and Trade of the Republic of Tajikistan, Abdurahmon Safarali, described the initiatives taken to reduce the negative impact of COVID19 on the economic and social spheres of the country and its consequences.
Abdurahmonzoda A.S. noted that on the basis of instructions from the Founder of Peace and National Unity - Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon a number of significant measures were taken in this direction, in resulted of which GDP in 2020 reached 82.5 billion somoni, and its real growth became 4.5 percent.
It was also noted that regional cooperation should be strengthened to improve the economic climate and trading system and to eliminate the negative impacts of COVID-19.
